With so many articles floating around the web over the years on how to get a top ranking in Google, even in just three days, I felt it was important to open my testing labs to you and show you how it is really done.

First, let’s take the latest advice being spewed by so called “expert SEOs” and put it to the test.

1. How do you get new content indexed into Google quickly?

[Dumb SEO]: The best way to get your content indexed by Google is submit your RSS feed to RSS Directories and also update your XML sitemap and post it in your Google Webmaster Tools account.

[Jerry West]: This is some of the worst advice you can EVER get in relation to getting indexed by Google. The problem herein lies in the fact that Google is VERY good in detecting duplicate content. So, if the RSS directories get picked up FIRST, there is a very good chance your original article will be credited to them, not you, and your version will be seen as the duplicate and will never rank. Also, the sitemap idea is fine, but it can be slow. The best way? Ping the page. It’s as simple as that.

 2. What about using Press Releases? Are they effective in indexing?

[Dumb SEO]: This is one of our greatest tricks in getting listed in Google like lightning. Issue your press release and you’ll get listed in not just Google, but all the major search engines in just 3-4 days.

[ Jerry West ]: Press Releases, while good, are not the answer for fast indexing by Google. What we answered above is correct: pinging. That is your fastest way in. Now, to stay in, you need links from solid places and that is where the Press Release can come into play.

And when it comes to issuing a press release, don’t go the free service route. While there are free services available out there, they aren’t really good. We suggest the $199.00 package with PRWeb. It gives great distribution and can really stick for quite some time.

To issue a press release, go to PRWeb

 3. So, can you tell me how to achieve a top ranking in Google?

[Dumb SEO]: I'm afraid to tell you there is no easy process as it could possibly take months, even years! With some luck and the right tools it is achievable.

[Jerry West]: There is no such thing as luck. Either something happens or it doesn't. Period.

[Dumb SEO]: There are two keys to getting a high ranking 1) Your Keywords & 2) High Page Rank (Sites that already rank high in the search engines) Websites Linking To Your Website

[Jerry West]: Top ranking sites have nothing to do with PageRank. Simply look at the top listings of competitive keyword phrases and you will often see a PageRank 0 site in the top ten. Ranking your site isn’t rocket science, but there is a clear strategy that works consistently that we will discuss below.

[Dumb SEO]: Start finding keywords and you can use free tools to do this. Find the keyword that are searched the most for your product or service and you are on your way.

[Jerry West]: It is highly advisable that you never use a free tool, with the exception of Google's Keyword tool, to get keyword research data. There are many paid tools which are good. While we don’t endorse a single tool, make sure it has the ability to show you all the organic keywords of a particular domain. Why? Simply put, just put in your main competitor and you instantly have all the keywords they are targeting, which completes the entire research process in just a few minutes, instead of spending hours as “experts” would recommend.

What do you do next? That’s simple: you test.

Take the most targeted keyword phrases and test with AdWords. You may be in shock. Test SEO keywords with PPC? Absolutely. You see, every web page is different. Every product offering is different. Just because a keyword phrase converted for Site A doesn’t mean it will convert for you. So before you spend hours, days, weeks, months or even years optimizing a phrase in SEO to get to be #1, it is probably a good idea to see if that keyword actually brings sales for you. PPC can show you this in hours so you know if you are wasting your time or if you just discovered gold. Just make sure when you run your test that you use Exact Match.

[Dumb SEO]: Once you have 50-60 keywords go into Google and type in the search phrases one by one. If there are over 6 million results for your phrase, you should move on, there is too much competition for the phrase and it would take either years of work to get a top ranking.

[Jerry West]: Thinking like this is just idiotic. Since you are going to test your keywords via Exact Match in PPC, you know the true competition for the keywords. For some reason, “expert” SEOs don’t get this. They do Broad Match searches and think that is the real competition. You would think that an expert SEO would actually understand how to do searches online. You need to type in the keyword phrase in quotes to get the true competition. This is “Exact Match”.

For example, if you type the keyword phrase: "diamond engagement rings new york" into Google, you get nearly 4-million web pages. The problem is, a document with the sentence:

"In a prime contest between the Oakland A's and the New York Yankees on the baseball diamond, the two teams were set for their engagement to see which team would stay in the hunt for World Championship rings."

You see, by typing without quotes, Google will return this document as part of the “competition”. Why? It contains the words diamond, engagement and rings, but not necessarily together. By placing quotes around your search, the result is less than 250,000 pages. That’s a big difference. By doing this, we restrict "the competition" to pages that actually are about the product being marketed. See the difference? You are now smarter than 90% of the SEOs out there.

It is highly advised that you use the tools at your disposal correctly, or you just may walk right past a great opportunity. And great opportunities are rare, but they are out there just waiting to be discovered.

[Dumb SEO]: Once you have decided on which keywords you are going to focus on. You need to make sure these keywords are featured all over the body of your website. Your best keywords should be placed in your title & headings on your pages.

[Jerry West]: Um, don't do this. You want to create compelling Titles and Headlines, not ones that are just keyword stuffed. You see, top ranking isn't enough - you have to then get the click through to your site. This is an aspect that most marketers neglect. This also doesn’t mean to ignore your keywords in your Title either, it is creating the best Title you can. This is why it is a important to get good at PPC, as the entire basis of effective PPC marketing is effective ads and it starts with the TITLE of your ad. Use these same Titles in your SEO work and you should see your click-throughs take off.

[Dumb SEO]: You now need to get links, mainly getting other websites to link to yours. Finding websites related to yours but sites that you are not in competition with and email the Webmasters of these sites and ask them for a link. Simply write them a personalized email, complement their site and ask them for a link exchange. If you can offer them something in return - even better!

[Jerry West]: What are you offering in return? I hate the email tactic. Good sites don't even look at those emails. I don’t and my colleagues don’t either. Here is a better idea: Pick up the phone and realize that one great link is worth two-dozen average ones.
